Care of the elderly

The Labour party’s attempt at a round table discussion on care of the elderly was boycotted by the Conservatives. How helpful!
The Conservative suggestion that Labour was proposing a “Death Tax” seemed remarkably close to Sarah Palin’s characterising of Obama’s health reform ideas as “Death Panels”. This is no way to advance a serious debate about a serious topic that affects every single person.
My own preference is for the simplest possible solution – universal free personal (and health) care. The Royal Commission that proposed this some years ago was absolutely right. Their report needs to be dug out, freshened up and implemented without delay.
