Care homes and personal budgets

In The Courant last week there was the completely unsurprising news that few elderly people are interested in holding their own budgets for personal care. This story came in the wake of the news some months ago that Tynedale’s care homes are all going to be closed.

My experience of elderly people’s needs and preferences is that they want regularity, simplicity, reliability, company and as little messing about as possible. By making a market of elderly care the government, through the Care Trust, is causing avoidable upset and even harm.

Its no use any government saying that they can’t afford it or they’ve got a shiny new way of delivering choice. They need to ask what the recipients want and act accordingly.

As the population ages this requirement for care is going to increase tremendously. Governments cannot evade their responsibilities for ever.
