MPs for sale

The situation in Westminster is beyond belief – MPs openly acknowledging or implying that they are for sale. Worse still, the suggestion is that government policy is for sale too.
The same thing occurred with the last Conservative administration with envelopes full of money. The most prominent figure being Hamilton whose seat was subsequently taken by the Independent Martin Bell.
Amusingly, just before the Hamilton case came to light I had had a question tabled in the Lords for free – amazing what a letter can do.
For local consumption I have just sent this letter to The Courant:
……………………………………………………………………..
For the record, I would like to state that as an MP I would never solicit or accept payment or promise of payment of any kind in exchange for activity in the political arena. Nor will I undertake paid lobbying activities of any description before, during or after my service as this constituency’s MP.
The depths to which the political class has sunk appear to be effectively bottomless. After this week’s ‘MPs for sale’ debacle, so similar to the Conservative Hamilton case, I feel it is essential for all candidates to make a solemn, binding, public undertaking before even daring to ask for a single vote.
A new broom – a whole new, clean, democratic political class – is the only way forward.
………………………………………………………..
The significance of these events really cannot be understated. We have moved beyond mere scandal and conventional ‘lets all kick an MP’ humour to a real, live, full-on crisis of democratic government in the UK.
Coming so soon before an election this makes for what Confucius would have called ‘interesting times’.
Never has there been a more pressing need for the wholesale replacement of the political class.
I pray that the electorate makes sound choices.
